I am completely undecided as to whether I love this home more because of the 400 plus years of history, the fact it is hidden in full view, that it has been restored and improved to meet 21st century expectation whilst retaining most, if not all of its character, or if it is simply because the views and garden are spectacular. What I am certain of though is that there are enough features and charm to fulfil even the longer of wish lists. There is also scope for changes for the new keeper.

The meaning of the homes’ name gives us a few clues to some of the possible history of the home. In Devon and Cornwall, Tenement is referred to as being the ancient and original farm dwelling, although probably referring to the tenancy of it – as it was in those days. Tenement also refers to houses of multiple occupancy, and so the possible renting of rooms backs up the evidence that it was once the village inn.

Often, we are asked to help find our clients a home with character, within a village. It must have parking, be a stroll from the pub, have a large enough garden that must be sunny, far reaching views, not on a main road, a home office/ gym and sauna. Oh, and there must be a large inglenook fireplace, a light and modern kitchen, a study or occasional bedroom for guests, a cloakroom, a large master bedroom with views, a beautiful four-piece bathroom with roll top bath, and if possible, countryside walks on the doorstep and a nice park for the children or grandchildren. Sounds impossible to put all that in one home doesn’t it? All too often it is. Not in this case though. The above list of attributes are all created from what this home offers. It is coincidence and luck (on my part) that it fits the wishes of most people’s extensive list of requirements for their dream Devon home.   

Ticking boxes aside, it is my experience that the feel of the home is what will make you want to buy it or not. If you are hoping to seat 25 for dinner in a baronial hall with minstrels playing in the gallery, this is not going to be the home for you. If however you want to smile every time you pull in to the driveway and see the views that you’ll get to enjoy daily, or imagine the fire keeping you warm in the winter and the cool cob walls giving respite from the heat in the height of summer, doors open and a gentle breeze blowing through, or sitting in the summer house on a warm evening, drinking wine and watching the sun set, then this may well be the home for you. The point is, I can see myself doing those things when visiting this home. It makes you want to love it. Incidentally I saw (in my minds eye) a lovely oak and glazed (with Herringbone red brick) addition on the back of the kitchen. When I asked the current keepers if they had thought to do it, they showed me the uncanny drawing (available to see upon viewing) that had been produced which fit beautifully, both in my mind and in balance to the home as it is. The home being grade 2 listed should not deter you from imagining changes. It is not impossible to make changes like this. It is just thought to be. So too is maintenance of a thatched roof perceived to be major – when it isn’t. £20 per month will see the ridge re done every 6 years as required. That’s two-good bottles of wine. Its nothing in relative value, especially considering what you get for your money.   

Only by visiting the home can you know if it is “the one”. I suggest taking the time to experience it. I would love to meet you there and experience your reaction – especially to the views.


From Torrington follow the B3227 towards South Molton and through the village of High Bullen, continue on the road passing the Cranford Inn, shortly after at the crossroads take the right hand turning signposted Sherwood Green, follow this road around to the right and continue until reaching Ebberly Cross and take the right hand turning signed for Roborough. Continue along this road and at the T junction turn right and immediately left and continue down into the village of Roborough. Upon entering the village of Roborough, take the first left. Just opposite the church you will see wooden double gates through which you will find the property at the end of a gravel driveway
